Outbreak infects ‘several’ Rangers employees after mandatory return to offices

Less than two weeks after becoming the first MLB team to require employees to return to work at offices and cease working from home, the Texas Rangers have had “several” employees test positive for COVID-19, according to an internal email, a copy of which was obtained by The Athletic.

In the communication, Vice President of Human Resources Danita Maxwell said that “other individuals who have been in close contact with these individuals have been notified and have been staying at home and quarantining and have been sent for testing.”

While the email laid out a number of protocols that the team would be implementing — mandatory masks at work unless employees are in their office alone, a mandate to work from home if employees are symptomatic or have been in contact with someone who has tested positive, among others — the team did not announce any plans to allow healthy or asymptomatic employees to return to a work-from-home arrangement, though sources indicated that all employees would have testing made available to them when they return to work on Monday.

For roughly five weeks before the return-to-work decision, Rangers employees had been given the option to work from their offices at the newly constructed Globe Life Field if they chose, but it was not mandatory. However, on June 10, Rangers co-owner and co-chairman Ray Davis sent an email to employees saying that “beginning Monday, June 15, we will all be back in the office together.” While “reasonable accommodations for individuals who have medical conditions or who are working through child care issues” were allowed, nothing in the email specified that employees with high-risk family members would be granted an exception, and employees would have to make a request to Maxwell and await approval.

During a town hall-style Zoom meeting hosted Friday by Vice President of Ballpark Operations Rob Matwick and General Manager and President of Baseball Operations Jon Daniels, internist Dr. David Hunter told employees, per sources, that they were more likely to become infected at home and bring the virus to the office than they were to catch it at the office. He also told employees that social distancing was not as important as wearing masks in preventing the spread of the coronavirus.

According to the CDC’s website, “The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus.” Further, when giving guidelines for masks, the CDC notes that mask-wearing is more about protecting others than protecting the wearer and reiterates: “Continue to keep about 6 feet between yourself and others. The cloth face cover is not a substitute for social distancing.”

Of note, Davis’ June 10 email was sent just two days after Tarrant County, where Globe Life Field is located, had its third-highest single-day number of positive COVID-19 tests since the onset of the pandemic, at 219. In the days since Davis’ email, that number has been surpassed seven times. On Thursday, Tarrant County set a record with 517 positive tests in one day. As of Friday, Tarrant County has had 10,363 positive cases and 218 deaths.

As of the time of publication, the Rangers still plan to allow fans into home games this season with up to 50 percent capacity, as outlined by Gov. Greg Abbott’s June 3 proclamation. As recently as Tuesday, Abbott said he was holding fast.

“We’re not changing that standard right now,” Abbott said in an interview on D-FW’s CBS11. “For one, we hope to have the coronavirus better under control. For another, we look forward to working with the teams, and to find out their strategies to make sure that they will be able to open their stadiums up safely. … If those teams could not make the case to the public that their stadiums will be safe, the public will not show up. So I feel confident we will find safe ways to open up the stadiums and have fans in stands, watching Major League Baseball.”

MLB determined earlier this week that each team will play 60 games this season, starting in late July.

Late Friday night, the team issued a statement.

“Over the last 48 hours, the Texas Rangers have received notification that several of our employees have received a positive test for COVID-19,” it read. “The Rangers immediately began the protocols that we have in place for positive COVID(-19) tests, and any employee who had direct contact with these individuals was sent home and will undergo COVID19 testing. No individuals will be allowed back into the facility without receiving a negative COVID-19 test.

“The health and safety of our employees are a top priority, and the Rangers will continue to diligently enforce the pandemic protocols that are in place for front office employees at Globe Life Field. These include temperature checks upon entering the building, mandatory wearing of face coverings, and regular sanitation and cleaning of the Globe Life Field facilities.”
