The Yankees make their 1st MLB Trade

June 10, 1903- Detroit Tigers Shortstop Kid Elberfeld‚ who was suspended for abusing an Umpire‚ is traded to the Highlanders for veteran MLB Infielders Herman Long and Ernie Courtney. It is the 1st MLB trade in the team’s short AL franchise history. The Highlanders' 1st trade is a good one as "The Tabasco Kid"‚ currently hitting .341‚ will be a key ingredient in New York's rise as contenders in 1904. Elberfeld had been accused by the Tigers Manager Edward Barrow of deliberately throwing games recently, as a ploy to get him traded by the team. The veteran MLB shortstop Long was 37 years old at the end of his MLB playing career. He had played in 22 games for the 1903 team, hitting just .188. Courtney was in 2nd season in the MLB, he was playing Shortstop for the 1903 Yankees, while hitting .266 in 25 games for the club. Elberfeld will be the Yankees starting Shortstop until the end of 1909 AL season, when he was sold to the Washington Senators He had hit .268 with 117 stolen bases. He was briefly the Yankees Playing-Manager in 1908, replacing the fired Clark Griffin. He lead the team to a 27-71 record.
